ePDG for VoWiFi

ePDG is used for VoWiFi feature by mobile operators.
It is used to secure the connection between mobile phones and operator services like voice.

ePDG was initially designed for any type of IP connection to the core network using a WiFi connection (non-3GPP access).
Therefor ePDG job is to establish an GTP tunnel between UE and PGW.
After that the VoWiFi call goes between UE and IMS using the IMS APN in the PGW.

Since VoWiFi originates from untrusted networks, IPsec encryption protects subscriber data. By utilizing SIM-based authentication to derivate encryption keys, the mobile operator maintains the same carrier-grade security standards as native 3GPP access (5GNR or LTE) while providing a seamless user experience.

VoWiFi benefits:

  • Free roaming data. Charging the subscriber for voice call while using free WiFi.
  • Better Service. Improved voice quality compared to low signal or fallback to 2G/3G calls in roaming.
  • Expands Range. Service in uncovered areas.
